Guwahati: An anxious night unfolded in Assam after an Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet went missing from radar screens over Karbi Anglong district on Thursday evening, triggering an intensive search and rescue operation in the region’s forested hills.
Aircraft loses radar contact
Defence sources said the twin-engine aircraft lost radar contact around 7 pm while on a routine sortie after taking off from the Air Force base in Jorhat. Soon after, residents in Nilip Block near Chokihola reported hearing a loud explosion, followed by plumes of smoke rising from a remote hillside, fuelling fears of a crash.
The Guwahati-based Defence PRO confirmed the development, stating that a Sukhoi Su-30MKI had gone missing from radar and that search and rescue operations were underway. Teams from the Indian Air Force, supported by ground forces, were swiftly mobilised to the suspected area despite fading light and challenging terrain.
The dense forests and uneven topography of Karbi Anglong have complicated initial efforts. Helicopters and specialised ground units are combing through the area, navigating steep slopes and limited road access. Night operations are continuing under difficult conditions.
While there are unconfirmed reports that one pilot may be missing, officials have not disclosed how many personnel were on board or their condition. The priority, sources said, is to locate the aircraft and ensure the safety of the crew.
About Sukhoi Su-30MKI
The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is considered the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s combat fleet and plays a crucial role in guarding the country’s eastern skies. Known for its range and manoeuvrability, the aircraft regularly operates from bases in the Northeast, a strategically sensitive region.
For villagers living near the suspected site, the sudden sound and sight of smoke brought fear and uncertainty. Authorities have urged residents to avoid the area to allow rescue teams to work without obstruction, while also requesting locals to share any information that may assist the search.
