The prestigious Sudirman Cup – the Badminton World Mixed Team Championship – is set to be held in Xiamen, China, from April 27 to May 4.Hosts China, the most dominant side in the history of the tournament with 13 titles, are the defending champions.
Given the strength of their team, they are also the home favourites. The tournament has been dominated by just three nations since its inception in 1989. While Indonesia won the inaugural edition in 1989, South Korea have lifted the title four times, including the second and third editions. China swept the remaining 13 editions. From an Indian standpoint, the best performance in the Sudirman Cup has been a quarterfinal finish – achieved twice, in 2011 and 2017. In the last edition held in Suzhou, China, India were eliminated in the group stage. In this 19th edition of the tournament, China, along with Indonesia, last edition’s runners-up South Korea, and Japan are the top four seeds. These teams are bolstered by world-class players. While China have Shi Yuqi and Wang Zhiyi, South Korea boast the most consistent women’s singles player of the time, An Se Young. Indonesia are led by Jonatan Christie and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, while Japan’s squad features Kodai Naraoka and Akane Yamaguchi.Among the notable absentees are Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India, and Malaysia’s Olympic bronze medallist Lee Zii Jia.India are placed in a tough Group D, along with Indonesia, European powerhouse Denmark – a ten-time semifinalists – and a spirited England. With Satwik-Chirag and the top women’s doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand missing the tournament, India will heavily rely on double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, and HS Prannoy.India will open their campaign against Denmark on April 27. Although Denmark are without their most successful player Viktor Axelsen, the reigning Olympic champion, India have no time to relax. Denmark are still bolstered by World No. 3 Anders Antonsen in men’s singles and the World No. 1 men’s doubles duo of Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen.GroupsThe group stage matches of the Sudirman Cup 2025 will be held from April 27 to May 1.
