A Delhi court has sentenced a man guilty of raping a three-and-a-half year old innocent girl to 20 years of imprisonment. Also fine has been imposed. The court said that such incidents not only leave a deep wound on the mind of the victim, but also shake the conscience of the society.

Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court has sentenced Ajay Kumar Gaur, who was found guilty of raping a three and a half year old innocent girl, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and has also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000. The court has also ordered a compensation of Rs 10.50 lakh to the victim.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Rana Deepak Singh said that such incidents not only leave a deep wound on the mind of the victim, but also shake the conscience of the society. The court said that this incident with such a young girl will have a deep impact on her mental and emotional development throughout her life, considering which the culprit does not deserve any leniency.

The court was hearing the sentence of Ajay, who was convicted under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and Section 376AB of the IPC. According to the complaint, the victim lived with her family on the ground floor of a rented house in Burari. In another room on the same ground floor, the landlord’s nephew Ajay and one of his relatives lived. On the night of 24 January 2023, the victim had gone to the accused’s room to play. The accused raped the girl during that time. An FIR was lodged at Wazirabad police station on the complaint of the victim’s mother.

During the hearing, the defense argued that the 27-year-old convict is the only support of his family and the responsibility of his disabled father, three unmarried sisters, younger brother and mother is on his shoulders. It was also said that he has been in jail for the last three years and has no previous criminal record. However, the court considered these arguments inadequate in the face of the brutality of the crime.

At the same time, Additional Public Prosecutor Vikas demanded from the court to give maximum punishment to the accused. He argued that a strict punishment is necessary not only to provide justice to the victim, but also to set an example in the society and prevent such crimes in future.
