A Chinese student suffered a mental breakdown after watching a horror film during a self-study session at school, reports South China Morning Post. After this incident, a case has been registered against that school. Considering the mental health of the student, the court ruled in his favor and ordered the school’s insurance provider to pay a compensation of 9,182 yuan (Rs 1.13 lakh).

The incident occurred in October 2023 when a teacher of the school was on leave and a self-study session was going on, during which some students suggested watching the film. After the consent of the class head, teacher and all the classmates, a horror movie was chosen. However, the name of that film has not been mentioned in the report. On the same day, when the students were chatting online with their mother, they had difficulty speaking and mental confusion. But the mental condition of one of the students became very bad.

With no prior history of mental illness, the student was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with Acute and Transient Psychotic Disorder. According to the Cleveland Clinic, psychosis is a disorder in which people may sometimes experience things that are not real.

The school has insured 5000 children?

Parents of the students claimed that the school had completely failed to maintain the mental health of the children as they developed mental health problems due to watching a horror movie being played on the campus. Meanwhile, the school tried to escape the allegations and told the court that the mental condition of the student was impaired due to a certain physical structure or pre-existing disease. The school said it had taken insurance for more than 5,000 students, including the victim, whose personal coverage limit was 5,00,000 yuan (about Rs 61 lakh).
