‘Strong leadership of Netanyahu’: PM Modi welcomes Israel-Hamas agreeing on Gaza peace plan

New Delhi: Hours after US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to first phase of Gaza peace plan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the agreement and said it reflects “strong leadership” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Taking to X, PM Modi said, “We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu.”  “We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring respite to them and pave the way for lasting peace.”

Israel, Hamas agree to 1st phase of Gaza ceasefire plan

Trump on Wednesday said that Israel and Hamas have agreed on the first phase of his Gaza peace plan and hailed the decision as a “historic and unprecedented” step to ending the two-year-old war.

“I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He further said that all the hostages will be released “very soon” and Israel will pull its troops back to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a “strong, durable, and everlasting peace.” Trump also thanked mediators Qatar, Egypt and Turkey, adding: “BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!”

Last week, Trump directed Israel to stop bombing the Gaza Strip after Hamas accepted some parts of his 20-point peace plan to end the nearly two-year war and return all the remaining hostages taken in the October 7, 2023, attack. Hamas agreed to release the hostages and hand over power to other Palestinians. The militant group, however, said that other aspects of the plan require further consultations among Palestinians. Following the announcement, PM Modi had said that India welcomes US President’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. He had also said that New Delhi will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.
