Fans waiting for the next chapter of the Stree franchise will have to wait a little longer. Producer Dinesh Vijan has confirmed that Stree 3 is planned for release in 2028. He also revealed that director Amar Kaushik has completed the film’s writing, giving the project a clearer direction ahead of production.
Dinesh Vijan shares release plans
According to PTI, Vijan discussed the upcoming film at the FICCI FRAMES event and confirmed the 2028 release window. He said Kaushik has finished writing the script and suggested that the story will retain elements that audiences enjoyed in the earlier films.
Vijan also indicated that the film could arrive around a major holiday period, mentioning Independence Day or Christmas as possible occasions. However, a specific release date has not been announced yet.
The producer teased that the beginning and ending of Stree 3 could surprise viewers, while avoiding details that might reveal major plot points.
Amar Kaushik has another film first
Before beginning work on Stree 3, Amar Kaushik is scheduled to direct Mahavatar, another major project from Dinesh Vijan’s production setup. Vicky Kaushal is set to play the lead in the film, which is based on the story of Lord Parshuram.
Vijan said Kaushik is an important part of the Stree and horror-comedy franchise but will first complete Mahavatar. According to his timeline, the director is expected to work on Mahavatar before moving towards Stree 3, with shooting for the latter expected to begin towards the end of the following year.
Stree franchise has a strong box office record
The original Stree was released in 2018 and featured Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee and Aparshakti Khurana. The horror comedy became a successful theatrical release and, according to the figures cited in the source material, earned around ₹129.90 crore in India.
The film established the characters and world that later became part of a larger horror-comedy universe developed by Maddock Films.
Stree 2 delivered a much bigger collection
Stree 2 arrived in cinemas on August 15, 2024, and expanded the franchise with returning performers including Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee. The film also featured Akshay Kumar and Mushtaq Khan in important appearances.
According to the collection figures provided, Stree 2 earned approximately ₹627.02 crore at the Indian box office. Its theatrical performance made it one of the major Hindi releases of 2024.
Maddock’s horror-comedy universe expands
Stree was followed by several films connected to the Maddock horror-comedy universe. Bhediya was released in 2022, while Munjya and Stree 2 arrived in 2024. Thama followed in 2025, adding another title to the expanding shared universe.
With Stree 3 now planned for 2028, the franchise is set to return with its central cast and creative team, although further details about the story, production schedule and final release date are yet to be announced.
