According to tradition, in ancient times, a demon named Hiranyakashipu had hidden the earth in the sea, then Lord Vishnu in the form of Varaha killed him and took the earth out of the sea and restored it to its place. When Varaha Avatar touched the earth, a mighty son was born, whose name was Narakasura.

Narakasura, the son of the earth, pleased Brahmadev and obtained many boons from him. He was also blessed with the boon that his death would happen only at the hands of his mother. After receiving the boon, Narakasura became very powerful. Whichever king he defeated, he captured his queen, thus capturing 16 thousand queens.
– In Dwaparyuga, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Shri Krishna and the earth incarnated as his wife Satyabhama. When Narakasura’s atrocities increased a lot and Shri Krishna came to know about this, he went to fight him. Shri Krishna was also accompanied by his wife Satyabhama. There was a fierce battle between Narakasura and Shri Krishna. While fighting, Shri Krishna got distracted for some time.
– When Satyabhama saw this condition of Shri Krishna, she came in her fierce form and in anger she killed Narakasura. In this way Narakasura was killed at the hands of his own mother. After this, Shri Krishna freed 16 thousand women from the captivity of Narakasura. The next day i.e. on Kartik Amavasya, people celebrated by lighting lamps.
– Shri Krishna also married those 16 thousand women to give them a proper place in the society. The festival of Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month to celebrate the killing of Narakasura. Lord Shri Krishna is especially worshiped on this day. Listening to the story of Narak Chaturdashi gives relief from Yama’s torture.
