Chaitra Navaratri is considered the most auspicious occasion to seek the blessings of Mother Durga. During this time devotees worship nine forms of Mother Goddess. Also observe fast. By fasting and worshiping, Mother Goddess becomes happy and removes all the sorrows of life.
At the time of Navratri worship, the story of Mother Durga and demon Mahishasura is read. Let us know whose son was Mahishasura, who created havoc in all the three worlds after the boon he received from Brahma.
Mahishasur was the son of a demon named Rambha.
Mahishasura was the son of a demon named Rambha. Rambha was the king of demons. The story of Mahishasura’s birth is found in Devi Bhagwat Purana, Markandeya Purana and Durga Saptashati (Chandi Path). According to the legend, Rambha’s brother was killed by the gods. When Rambha came to know about the death of his brother, he decided to take revenge from the gods and started penance to Agni Dev. Agni Dev was pleased with his penance.
After this, he asked for a boon from him to have a powerful son who could defeat all the demons and gods. Agni Dev gave him this boon. After that, Rambh’s mind got attracted towards a Mahishi (demon in the form of a buffalo). He had a relationship with her. From her womb a special demon child was born who was half buffalo and half human. He was named Mahishasur. Mahishasura was a very powerful demon.
Was a great devotee of Lord Brahma
Mahishasura was a great devotee of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, and being pleased with his devotion, Lord Brahma had given him a boon that his death would not be possible at the hands of any god or demon. After receiving the boon from Lord Brahma, Mahishasura became arrogant. He defeated the gods and took control of heaven. Not only this, he started creating havoc in all the three worlds.
At last, the deities, in distress, reached the Trimurti Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh for help. Then all the gods came together and fought to defeat him, but Mahishasura was wearing the armor blessed by Lord Brahma. After this Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva became filled with extreme anger. Great brightness manifested from his anger. A luminous power also merged with the bodies of other gods and became one with that radiance.
Mother Durga killed the demon
Mother Durga was incarnated by the power of the gods. Lord Shiva gave Trishul to Mother Durga. Lord Vishnu gave Chakra to mother. Similarly, all the Gods and Goddesses gave many types of weapons to the Mother Goddess. Finally, from the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month, there was a fierce war between Mother Durga and Mahishasura, which lasted for 9 days and on the 10th day, Mother killed Mahishasura.
