New Delhi: One fruit that comes to mind when we hear the words “summer” and “hydration” is watermelon. The fruit, which contains almost 92 per cent water, not only provides your body with the hydration and electrolytes it needs to beat the summer heat but also tastes absolutely delicious. What makes it even tastier and crisper is when kept in the fridge, according to many individuals.
We often prefer consuming watermelon directly taken out from the fridge that is still cold and feels crispier, but what we don’t know is that it is doing more harm than helping our health. Senior Dietitian, Geetika Chopra, highlights some major facts that reflect on how it can be harmful for one to eat watermelon directly taken out from the fridge.
Why Watermelon must not be eaten directly from fridge
1. Slow down digestion
Watermelon is naturally cooling. When you eat it ice-cold, the sudden temperature drop can slow down digestion, cause bloating, cramps, or even mild stomach discomfort in some people. The digestive tract functions best at a stable temperature, and very cold foods can temporarily disrupt that balance.
2. It may reduce nutrient absorption
Research suggests that storing watermelon at room temperature helps retain more lycopene and antioxidants. When eaten extremely cold, the body takes longer to process it, potentially affecting how quickly these nutrients are absorbed.
Many people cut watermelon into pieces and keep them in the fridge for a long time. Doing so not only reduces the fruit’s key nutrients like vitamin C, but also increases the risk of bacterial growth, warns Geetika Chopra.
3. It can irritate sensitive teeth
Chilled watermelon can trigger tooth sensitivity, especially for people with weakened enamel. Pain or discomfort while eating cold foods is a common sign of underlying dental issues.
4. It may aggravate sinus or throat issues
Very cold foods can tighten nasal passages, worsen sinus congestion, or trigger a sore throat, particularly in people sensitive to sudden temperature changes.
5. Cold fruit slows metabolism briefly
Eating very cold foods can cause a temporary drop in your core temperature, forcing the body to work harder to balance it, which may slow digestive metabolism for a short period.
Enjoying fruits in summer is important, but keep in mind that fruits are a natural source of deliciousness and must be enjoyed at room temperature to avoid health risks and maximise the benefits.
