Stars return! Australia unveils squad for home series against India

New Delhi: Australia have recalled several key players as they announced their squads for the upcoming white-ball series against India, starting later this month. The return of experienced campaigners like Mitchell Starc and batter Matt Short adds firepower to a side preparing for both ODIs and T20Is.

Starc announced his retirement from T20I cricket last month and will now rejoin the international fold to face a strong Indian line-up that features former captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. His presence strengthens an Australian bowling unit that is missing injured skipper Pat Cummins. In his absence, T20I captain Mitch Marsh will continue to lead the side across both formats.

Alongside Starc, three other players have also been recalled to the ODI squad- Matt Short, Matt Renshaw, and Mitchell Owen. These changes come after Australia’s 2-1 series defeat to South Africa last month. Meanwhile, Aaron Hardie, Matthew Kuhnemann and Marnus Labuschagne have been left out. Labuschagne will focus on four-day cricket for Queensland ahead of England’s Test series later this year.

T20I squad and World Cup preparations

Australia also named a 14-player squad for the first two T20Is against India with Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis earning recalls after missing the recent series against South Africa. The T20 leg of the series will be crucial preparation for the team ahead of next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The selection chair George Bailey explained the rationale behind the squad choices, highlighting a balance between immediate performance and long-term planning. “We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Bailey said. He added that the majority of the T20 squad would remain together to ensure continuity, while allowing certain players to be managed ahead of the Test series.

Series schedule and key fixtures

The three-match ODI series will kick off in Perth on October 19, followed by games in Adelaide on October 23 and Sydney on October 25. The T20I series begins in Canberra on October 29, with subsequent matches in Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast and Brisbane, finally concluding on November 8.
