Haridwar: The Uttarakhand High Court has raised serious concerns about alleged misconduct inside temples and ashrams in Haridwar.
During a hearing on petitions related to the Maa Chanda Devi temple, the Court expressed anguish over reports that the temple’s mahant was facing criminal charges, including allegations of a live-in relationship and molestation.
Court’s strong remarks
Justice Rakesh Thapliyal, while hearing the matter, said the situation was “alarming” and questioned how such activities could take place inside temples. The Court remarked, “Have times come to this, that such things are happening inside temples? At least spare religious places like temples, mosques, and gurdwaras.”
The judge noted that devotees from across India and abroad visit temples with faith, and their sentiments are deeply hurt when such allegations surface. Donations given by devotees, the Court stressed, are meant for charitable purposes like hospitals and schools, not for personal expenses of temple managers.
Allegations against mahant
The petitions highlighted allegations against Mahant Rohit Giri, including divorce proceedings, a live-in relationship that led to a child, and molestation charges filed by Punjab Police. The Court said such activities cannot be tolerated in religious places and warned that interim protection granted to the mahant would be vacated if he failed to cooperate with ongoing investigations.
Orders for surprise inspections
The Court directed the Haridwar Collector to form a team and conduct surprise inspections of temples and ashrams to check activities taking place there. Reports of these inspections must be submitted to the Court in a sealed cover.
Background of the case
Last year, the High Court had taken serious note of mismanagement in the Maa Chanda Devi temple trust and directed the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) to oversee its functioning. The Supreme Court, in August 2025, upheld this order and asked the Haridwar Collector to personally inquire into the temple’s management.
Since BKTC took charge, temple funds have reportedly increased and encroachments have been removed. The High Court has now sought updated reports from the authorities to ensure transparency and accountability.
