The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed that the 2027 Supercopa de España will be hosted in Doha, Qatar, marking a temporary relocation from its usual Saudi Arabian home.
The quad-team tournament, featuring Spain’s top clubs, is set to captivate football fans in early to mid-February 2027.
The move to Qatar’s capital comes as Saudi Arabia, the tournament’s primary host until at least 2030, faces scheduling conflicts with the AFC Asian Cup (scheduled from January 7 to February 6, 2027) and the first Esports Olympic Games, both scheduled for the same period. RFEF President Rafael Louzán had previously indicated Doha as the leading alternative host for the Supercopa, citing Qatar’s state-of-the-art sports infrastructure and experience in hosting major events.
Contract Extension and Revenue Model
Despite the single-year venue change, the RFEF confirmed that its multi-year partnership with Saudi Arabia remains secure. The long-term agreement between Spanish football’s governing body and Saudi stakeholders has been extended until at least 2030, ensuring the tournament will return to Saudi soil for future editions.
RFEF President Rafael Louzán highlighted the financial importance of hosting the tournament in the Middle East, noting that the commercial deal generates over $58.5 million per year through sponsorship, audiovisual rights, and service agreements.
Approximately half of the total revenue is distributed directly among the four participating clubs, while over $30 million is reallocated to support grassroots and lower-tier football competitions across Spain.
Competition Format and Context
The Spanish Super Cup adopted its current four-team format in 2020, bringing together the champions and runners-up of La Liga alongside the two finalists of the Copa del Rey.Saudi Arabia has hosted the tournament in five of the last six seasons, with only the 2021 edition staged in Seville due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
Selecting Doha maintains the federation’s strategy of staging the competition internationally to build global viewership and secure crucial revenue streams. Specific match dates and venue assignments within Qatar will be finalised closer to the event.
