Spain shocks france as Lamine Yamal shines in World Cup 2026 semifinal

Spain shattered France’s   ambitions in Arlington, Texas, toppling the pre-tournament favorites and denying Kylian Mbappé his much-anticipated moment of global ascendancy.

On what was expected to be the stage for a French coronation, it was Spain’s collective prowess, orchestrated by prodigious talent Lamine Yamal, that stole the spotlight and powered the team to the FIFA 2026 Final.

The high-stakes semi-final at Dallas Stadium saw Spain execute a tactical masterclass, systematically dismantling French hopes of securing a third consecutive title. France, carrying the weight of history and expectation, were edged out by a Spanish side that dictated play through incisive passing and relentless teamwork. Kylian Mbappé, often hailed as a generational talent and tipped for footballing immortality, was left to reflect as his nation’s campaign ended abruptly.

Despite his eight goals in the tournament and a resume already studded with a  win and a runner-up medal, Mbappé’s quest for undisputed GOAT status faces another delay. French fans arrived in Arlington donning shirts with the now-viral “dictator” meme, underscoring the immense expectations placed upon their star. Hugo Naulot, a Normandy-born supporter now residing in California, articulated this sentiment: “If France win the  this year, I think he’ll be the greatest player ever for the World Cup. So I think he has the chance to become the best   player ever this summer. And he’s only 27. He’s up there. He’s won a World Cup and been a vice champion. If you’re talking performance for his country, he’s probably the best of all-time.”

Nicholas Theodorowicz, with French heritage himself, echoed this view, stating, “He’s so close to breaking the all-time goal record and if he wins this, he’s already got it.” Yet, the French campaign ultimately finished in heartbreak, with Ousmane Dembélé also falling short despite his recent Ballon d’Or and La Liga titles.

Attention quickly shifted to Spain’s emerging sensation, Lamine Yamal, who celebrated his 19th birthday by winning a crucial penalty, courtesy of a foul by Lucas Digne. While Yamal’s statistical impact-just one goal and a 2.8 xG+xA tally-may not fully capture his influence, his presence has electrified the Spanish attack. Mikel Oyarzabal remains the only Spanish player with higher expected goals and assists.

The Spanish faithful erupted in the 86th minute as legends Carles Puyol, Sergio Ramos, Xavi Hernandez, and Iker Casillas were shown celebrating, signaling a new era for La Roja. Alvaro Reynoso from Rioja remarked, “The team is very good and improving, playing better and better. [But] they are not comparable. That team individually was strong but this team collectively is. They know how to compete. They’ve won EURO and the Nations League. They will compete.” Pablo Varona, standing alongside Reynoso, was unequivocal in his praise: “Oh, Yamal! Lamine, Lamine, for sure, Lamine. Lamine. He’s barely 19 years old. Won the EURO, second in the Ballon d’Or. He is one [of one].”

Spain now find themselves one win away from repeating the historic EURO-World Cup double, a feat that would further cement the legacy of this new generation. The   world turns its eyes to La Roja, poised for greatness and daring fans to dream of another golden era.
