South And North Indian Wedding Rituals: Marriages taking place in India or rather Indian culture and traditions are worth seeing. Drums are played in marriages. Why do weddings take place during the day in South India?
According to the ancient scriptures and Vedic rules of Hindu religion, marriage should always be performed in daylight. There is a religious belief that while taking seven rounds, along with Agni Dev, Sun Dev should also be made a witness to it. The people of South India have preserved this Vedic tradition till today. Day time is of ‘gods’. Even today, marriages are performed there only after sunrise and during the auspicious time of the day.
Why is there a tradition of night weddings in North India?
Whereas in North India, night marriage is not a ‘Vedic ritual’. It is said that the problem of bandits and invaders was very severe during the medieval period. Therefore, people in North India started marrying in the dark of night to save their daughters and wealth. Marriage at night is not a religious ritual, but it was a strategic decision.
Enemies should not have any idea about the marriage and there should be no hindrance in it. That’s why weddings started taking place at night in North India. ‘Barat’ was actually considered to be a group of warriors and men carrying weapons accompanying the groom. So that the enemy cannot attack on the way or at the pavilion.
