Somalia Launches New eTAS System, Replacing Visa-On-Arrival for Travellers

Starting September 2025, Somalia officially replaced its visa-on-arrival system with a new Electronic Travel Authorization (eTAS). The move is designed to simplify border entry and reduce long queues that travellers previously faced at airports.

With eTAS, international travellers can now apply online before arriving, making the process faster and more predictable. But here’s the catch: anyone who arrives without an approved eTAS won’t be allowed to enter the country.

Who Needs an eTAS to Enter Somalia?

Most foreign nationals travelling to Somalia for tourism, business, or short-term studies now need to apply for an eTAS before their trip. Applications must be completed through the official portal at etas.gov.so.

The eTAS can be issued for single or multiple entries, depending on the visa type and duration of stay.

You need an eTAS if you:

  • Are visiting Somalia for business, tourism, or study
  • Do not hold a multiple-entry visa issued before September 1, 2025
  • Are not a resident or work permit holder
  • Do not hold a diplomatic or UN (UNLP) passport
  • Are not from a visa-exempt country under a bilateral agreement

Who is Exempt From the eTAS Requirement

Some travellers won’t need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTAS) under the new system. These include:

  • Foreign nationals with valid multiple-entry visas issued before September 1, 2025
  • Residents and work permit holders in Somalia
  • Diplomatic and UN passport holders
  • Visa-exempt nationals covered under existing bilateral agreements

It’s also important to note that Somaliland operates independently when it comes to entry rules. Travellers heading there must follow Somaliland’s separate visa requirements, as Somalia’s eTAS doesn’t apply in that region.

How to apply for the Somalia eTAS

Applying for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTAS) is straightforward:

  1. Visit the official eTAS portal: https://etas.gov.so/
  2. Fill out the online form with your personal and travel details
  3. Upload the required documents
  4. Pay the visa fee online
  5. Wait for email confirmation and approval

Once approved, travellers can download and print their authorization. The eTAS becomes valid from the arrival date provided in the application, and travellers must enter within 180 days of that date.

Entry Points and Validity

Travellers can use the eTAS at designated entry points across Somalia, including:

  • Mogadishu
  • Bosaso
  • Garowe
  • Galkayo
  • Kismayo

The eTAS can be valid for a single trip or multiple entries, depending on what’s approved. Make sure the validity period aligns with your travel plans to avoid issues at immigration.

What is Somalia’s eTAS System?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTAS) is a digital travel clearance that replaces the old visa-on-arrival system. It allows authorities to pre-screen visitors before they travel, improving border efficiency and security.

It’s part of a broader global trend. Countries like Kenya, South Africa, the UK, and Israel have already adopted similar systems to streamline travel and enhance safety.

Countries Requiring and Exempt From eTAS

As of now, Somalia hasn’t published a full, official list of countries exempt from the eTAS requirement. However, based on available information:

  • The eTAS applies to most nationalities entering Somalia.
  • Exemptions primarily include residents, diplomats, and those with existing multiple-entry visas.
  • All travellers must hold a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival.

The Immigration & Citizenship Agency of Somalia is expected to release a detailed exemption list soon.

Final Thoughts

Somalia’s new eTAS system marks a major step toward modernising its border management. For travellers, it means fewer surprises on arrival and a smoother, faster entry process, provided you sort your authorization before boarding the flight.
