Sutak Kaal Rules: In Hindu religion and scriptures, the time before solar eclipse is called ‘Sutak period’. In a way, it is considered a time of inaccuracy and negativity. The Sutak period has started just 12 hours before the first solar eclipse of the year on 17 February 2026. According to the scriptures, when the influence of Rahu on Sun God increases, then negative energy starts circulating in the entire world. The main objective of Sutak period is to save us from this negativity and to provide spiritual purification. By maintaining restraint and caution during this period, there is a pleasant possibility of averting the crises in life.
What is good for you to do during Sutak period?
During Sutak period, it is best to keep the mind calm and meditate on God instead of physical hustle and bustle. At this time, you should chant the mantras of your favorite God in your mind, so that there remains positivity in your home and mind. Before the start of Sutak, add basil leaves to milk, curd and cooked food. Tulsi has the amazing power to stop negative energy, due to which the food remains pure. During this period, reading religious books and remaining calm and introspecting can prove to be very helpful in increasing your mental strength.
What things should be avoided during Sutak period?
Sutak period is not considered sacred, hence some activities are prohibited during this period. According to the scriptures, after applying Sutak, touching and worshiping the idols of God is prohibited. At this time, we should also avoid cooking and eating new food, because due to less power of the Sun, there is a possibility of having a bad effect on our digestive system. Apart from this, one should avoid sleeping, cutting nails or using sharp objects like scissors and knives during Sutak. Pregnant women in particular are lovingly advised to be more careful and stay indoors during this period.
Importance of purification and donation of house after Sutak
As soon as the eclipse ends, the effect of Sutak period also ends. It is very important to do purification immediately after this. First of all, take bath by mixing some Ganga water in the bath water and then sprinkle Ganga water all over the house. Clean the kitchen thoroughly and prepare fresh food, as food prepared during Sutak is considered impure. Donating food grains or clothes to a needy person after the eclipse is a very virtuous act. By doing this one gets the blessings of Sun God and the spoiled work starts getting done.
