Social media ban in nepal: Social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Instagram have been banned in Nepal. The Nepal government announced this on Thursday. Within the time limit fixed by the government, these social media platforms did not register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. Due to this, the government has taken strict steps. The ban will come into effect from midnight on Thursday.
Big social media companies did not register
During the meeting chaired by Communications and IT Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, a decision was taken to ban social media apps. They do not follow the compulsory registration process under the instructions given to manage the use of social networks in 2023.
The notice issued by the ministry states that social media companies were given several days after August 28 for registration. Even when the deadline ended on Wednesday night, no major social media platforms including Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Alphabet (YouTube), X (East Twitter), Redit and LinkedIn did not apply for registration.
Ban will end on registration
The ministry said that apps like tickets, vibes, with, nimbus and Popo Live have registered. Telegram and Global Diary have applied and are in the process of approval. Facebook and other social media companies have not yet commented on the Nepal government’s decision. Ministry spokesman Gajendra Kumar Thakur said,
All others within Nepal, except 5 listed platforms and two procedural platforms, will be deactivated. If a platform completes registration, it will be opened again on the same day.
People expressed concern over the ban on apps
This decision of the Nepal government is expected to affect millions of Nepalis living abroad. Nepalese people living abroad for earning or studies use social media platforms like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp for talks.
Another impact of the ban will have on content creators. Facebook has recently included Nepal in the list of eligible countries for content mudification. This allows users to earn directly from video, reels or stories.
