Mount Yalung Ri Avalanche: 7 people, including American, Canadian, Italian and Nepali climbers, died in an avalanche on Nepal’s Yalung Ri mountain. The rescue operation slowed down due to bad weather and delay in permission for the helicopter, while 5 people are injured.

Nepal Avalanche: On Monday, 7 climbers died in a massive avalanche on Mount Yalung Ri in Nepal, while 5 are said to be injured. The height of this mountain is about 4,900 meters i.e. 16,070 feet. According to Dolakha district police, the dead include 3 Americans, 1 Canadian, 1 Italian and 2 Nepalese nationals. The accident occurred when the team of 15 people was moving towards Gaurishankar and Yalung Ri. Then suddenly a large portion of snow slipped and fell on the base camp and buried many people there.

Problems increased due to delay in rescue

According to the local administration, several calls for help were made since morning, but the rescue operation started late. Ward President Ninggeli Sherpa said that Rollwaling area is a restricted area, hence there was a delay in getting permission for the helicopter to fly. Due to this, the rescue team could not reach the spot for several hours, which made the search work even more difficult.

Bad weather became the biggest obstacle

Nepali Army, Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed in relief work. However, due to extremely bad weather the helicopter could not reach the accident site. Due to heavy snowfall and cold winds, the teams have to proceed on foot, due to which the pace of rescue has slowed down considerably. According to local officials, the delay of the helicopter affected the rescue operation. An official said, the accident happened at 9 am, but due to being stuck in administrative process, the helicopter took off late.

Yalung Ri one of the dangerous peaks of Nepal

Yalung Ri peak is located in the Rollwaling Valley of Bagmati province of Nepal and is considered a particularly challenging route for mountaineers. The temperature here remains very low and there is often danger of sudden snow slides. This is the reason why trekking or climbing is not allowed in this area without government permission.
