Smriti Mandhana breaks 28-year-old record in women’s cricket with most runs in calendar year

New Delhi: Star Indian batter Smriti Mandhana broke a 28-year-old record in women’s cricket on Thursday with most runs in a calendar year. Mandhana achieved the massive feat in ODIs after scoring her 22nd run in the women’s World Cup match against South Africa in Vishakhapatnam on October 9.

Belinda Clark from the Australian women’s team held the record for scoring 970 runs in ODIs back in 1997 calendar year. The record by the Australian player remained intact for close to three decades with the India batter finally breaking it.

Meanwhile, after registering the massive feat, Mandhana scored one more run and was dismissed on a score of 23 after India were invited to bat first by Proteas.
