Born to a half-Punjabi, half-Maharashtrian father, Ajay Kumar Malhotra, and a Bengali mother, Shibani, Smriti participated in Miss India 1999 before landing the role of Tulsi Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi in 2000. She also worked as a McDonald’s employee during her early youth.

Smriti married a Parsi businessman, Zubin Irani, in 2001. In October the same year, the couple had their first child, a son named Zohr.
