The fear surrounding the Voter List Revision (SIR) process has tragically claimed another life in West Bengal. A woman in the Murshidabad district committed suicide due to SIR panic . On Sunday morning, Shakila Bewa (55) , a resident of Surulia-Gatepara area, jumped in front of a goods train near Beldanga police station.
Three Suicides Due to SIR Fear
Local sources reported that Shakila Bewa was living in extreme fear ever since the SIR process began across the state on November 4. The woman had repeatedly told her family members that the police would come and arrest her once the SIR list was finalized.
Shakila’s family members stated that she went to the railway tracks around 6 AM on Monday morning and lay down. She was hit by a goods train traveling from Baharampur towards Beldanga and died on the spot. This incident marks the third suicide in the Murshidabad district linked to SIR fear since the process began on November 4. Baharampur GRP officials have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
Shootout in Nalhati, Woman Shot Four Times While Returning from Beauty Parlour
In a separate incident, a significant commotion was caused by a shootout in Nalhati. On Saturday night around 8:45 PM, miscreants fired four rounds at a woman as she was entering her home gate. The victim, Seema Khan, is admitted to Rampurhat Hospital in critical condition.
Seema Khan, a resident of Nalhati Paschim Bidhupara, was returning home from a beauty parlor. As she was entering her gate, miscreants suddenly opened fire, hitting her with four bullets. She was rushed to Rampurhat Medical College Hospital by locals and the police. Her condition is currently reported to be critical.
A relative of Seema, Monira Khatun, claimed that “Seema Khan had a long-standing dispute with her husband,” and suspects her husband may be involved in the incident. However, the police have not yet commented on the claim. Nalhati Police Station has launched an investigation to ascertain the motive and identify the culprits behind the shooting.
