EC SIR Deadline Extension: The Election Commission is considering extending the deadline of SIR in many states including UP, Bengal. A final decision on this will be taken on Thursday. There was a heated argument between the government and the opposition on Wednesday over the SIR issue.

SIR Deadline Extension News: These days, from Parliament to the streets, the discussion about SIR is in full swing. On Wednesday also, the government and the opposition were seen face to face on this issue in the Lok Sabha. Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to Rahul Gandhi’s allegations one by one and accused the opposition of doing politics. Meanwhile, big news is coming regarding SIR (Special Intensive Revision). According to the report of NDTV, the Election Commission (EC) is seriously considering extending the deadline of SIR in many states including Uttar Pradesh. The final decision will be taken on Thursday, when top EC officials will review the progress of form digitization and submission.

Why can SIR deadline be extended?

According to sources, not only UP, West Bengal is also among those states where EC may agree to extend the deadline. Earlier, the Kerala deadline was extended from December 11 to December 18. The biggest reasons for extending the deadline are the huge opposition from the opposition in many states, increasing workload on BLOs and problems being faced by voters.

EC’s schedule itself is wrong – Opposition

Congress, TMC, CPI(M) and SP were already saying that the SIR schedule is completely impractical. Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said that the Election Commission now understood that it was impossible to complete the revision in the old timeline. He demanded a long and organized schedule like in 2003. TMC calls SIR ‘wrongly prepared’. TMC leader Joy Prakash Majumdar claimed that more than 40 people (including BLOs) in West Bengal died due to this heavy work pressure. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said that it is impossible to verify 16 crore voters in UP in just one month. According to him, SIR has become a problem for both voters and BLOs.

How much work has been done regarding SIR, how much is left?

EC has released updated data a day before the deadline. 50.8 crore enumeration forms have been digitized and 23.22 lakh forms are still pending. A total of 50.96 crore forms were distributed during SIR Phase-2. Talking about the performance of the states, Andaman-Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry completed 100% digitization and all the other states completed more than 99% work. Kerala is at 98.5%, so the deadline has already been extended there. The total voters in Phase-2 states are up to 50.99 crore. This figure is till 27 October 2025.
