Singapore is doubling down on keeping experienced workers in the workforce.
The Government has confirmed that the Part-Time Re-employment Grant, better known as PTRG, will continue until 31 December 2027. Applications reopened on 18 December 2025, according to the Ministry of Manpower.
For employers and senior workers, this extension matters. It gives companies more time and financial support to offer flexible, part-time roles to older employees who want to keep working but on more manageable terms.
What is the Part-Time Re-employment Grant (PTRG)?
The PTRG is a government grant that helps employers re-employ senior workers in part-time or flexible roles.
In simple terms, the Government pays employers to keep older workers on, instead of pushing them into full retirement. The focus is on flexibility, lighter workloads, and long-term career planning.
How the PTRG Works
The setup of the PTRG scheme is quite simple:
- Employers hire or retain workers aged 60 and above on part-time or flexible arrangements
- The Government pays S$2,500 per senior worker
- Each employer can receive up to S$125,000 in total
The grant supports roles that may include shorter hours, flexible schedules, or redesigned jobs that better suit older employees.
Why the Grant Was Extended
Demand has stayed strong since the scheme began in 2020. As of November 2025:
- More than 7,500 employers have used the grant
- Over 65,000 senior workers have benefited
- Around S$92 million has already been paid out
The extension gives employers an additional two years to plan ahead and retain experienced staff without requiring full-time commitments.
Who Manages the PTRG?
The Singapore National Employers Federation is the official programme partner. Employers can find application details through the Ministry of Manpower’s PTRG portal.
Why This Matters for Senior Workers
For older employees, the PTRG changes the way of retirement.
Instead of an all-or-nothing exit, it allows:
- Continued income
- More control over working hours
- Roles adjusted to physical or lifestyle needs
- A smoother transition into later career stages
It also helps workers stay active, skilled, and connected to the workforce longer.
Other support Schemes for Senior Employment
The PTRG does not work alone. It sits alongside other support measures, including:
1. Senior Employment Credit: This offers wage offsets of up to 7 per cent for employers who hire workers aged 60 and above.
2. SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme: This programme supports workers aged 40 and above with reskilling and upskilling, helping them stay relevant in a changing job market.
3. Career Conversion Programme: Run by Workforce Singapore, this scheme provides higher funding for mature workers who want to switch careers or move into new roles.
A Bigger Push for Age-Friendly Workplaces
In July 2025, the Government and its partners formed the Tripartite Workgroup on Senior Employment. The goal is straightforward: to make workplaces more age-friendly and help senior workers remain productive.
The group has also launched an Alliance for Action, involving 32 organisations, to test ideas around training, career guidance, job redesign, and flexible workload roles.
Final Thoughts
Singapore’s message is clear. Longer working lives do not have to mean longer hours.
By extending the Part-Time Re-employment Grant to 2027, the Government is backing flexibility, experience, and choice. For many older workers, that makes staying in the workforce feel less like a burden and more like an option.
