Sundeep Kishan’s Sigma opened in theatres on October 2 amid considerable curiosity, especially because it marks Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut.
However, the film’s opening-day numbers have raised questions about the star’s current market, particularly in Telugu cinema.
According to trade reports, Sigma collected around Rs 2.35 crore net in India on Day 1, with the Tamil version contributing Rs 1.50 crore and the Telugu version Rs 85 lakh.
The Telugu version recorded around 25% occupancy, while the Tamil version performed better on its opening day.
The numbers are not necessarily disastrous for a film opening on a weekday, and the theatrical run is still in its early stages.
However, they do suggest that the extensive pre-release buzz surrounding Jason Sanjay’s debut did not immediately translate into a major opening for Sundeep Kishan. Even Megastar Chiranjeevi promoted the film in Telugu.
Speaking about content and audience connect is a different issue altogether.
What is genuinely shocking here is the opening itself, especially when it comes to understanding the current strength of Sundeep Kishan’s market.
With Sigma also failing to create a significantly stronger opening in Tamil Nadu, its overall theatrical performance will determine whether the film can overcome its modest start.
