Who was V. Shantaram?
Born Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre in 1901, the filmmaker carved a monumental legacy over a career that lasted nearly seven decades. He established two major film studios: Prabhat Film Company in 1929 and Rajkamal Kalamandir in 1942. Both played crucial roles in developing modern Indian filmmaking. His 1932 feature Ayodhyecha Raja became the first Marathi-language talkie, cementing his place as an innovator who embraced technology long before it became standard.
Shantaram’s filmography includes several classics that are still revered today. Works such as Duniya Na Mane (1937), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957), Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955) and Navrang (1959) were praised for their technical finesse and bold social messaging. From addressing dowry and communal harmony to exploring prisoner rehabilitation, his films used entertainment as a medium for reform.
