New Zealand batter Kane Williamson has revealed that he spotted the captaincy spark in Shubman Gill quite early in his career and hailed the young captain to be wise beyond his years.
Gill was recently handed over the leadership duties of the Test team following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the longest format.

“He’s responded beautifully, hasn’t he? I always thought captaincy sits well with Shubman. I know that happening in a franchise space is slightly different; it’s a shorter sort of project versus captaining your country, which is a lot more consuming. Watching Shubman operate and he’s wise beyond his years and that responsibility is naturally something that he would look to take on,” Williamson told Times of India.
Furthermore, the Kiwi batter called Gill a world-class batter and said that the lessons he’s learning in England are going to be valuable going ahead in his career.
“So hearing him get that opportunity was no surprise to me but the quality of the player is something that goes without saying. He’s absolutely world-class To see him come over here and conditions that can be challenging with the Dukes from time to time, and dominate like he has, it’s been amazing. There are going to be really valuable lessons for him and we’re looking towards the leader that he will become but it’s still early days,” he added.
Gill is enjoying rich form ever since taking up the leadership duties as he’s the leading run scorer in the series so far, having accumulated 607 runs from three matches. He started the series with a magnificent innings of 147 in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds and followed it up with knocks of 269 and 161 in the two innings respectively at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
As a result, he etched his name in the record books, re and was also adjudged Player of the Match in India’s 336-run victory. However, Gill failed to continue his form in the third Test at Lord’s, scoring just 22 runs across two innings as India ended up losing the Test.
With India 1-2 behind in the series, Gill will be eager to bounce back with a big score in the fourth match in Manchester and help India make a comeback in the series.
