Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill is likely to be elevated as the next T20I vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, while Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in T20Is might as well threaten Rohit Sharma’s grip on ODI captaincy, since Gill is the next contender to take over the leadership.
After the successful conclusion of the England vs India Test tour, where skipper Shubman Gill led India for the first time in the longest format, he is now about to be crowned in several other leadership roles for India across the other formats as well.
As revealed by RevSportz, Shubman Gill is likely to be back in the T20I side after scoring 754 runs in the recently concluded Test series. Gill was not picked in the T20I format due to a packed schedule.
Shubman Gill to take over as vice-captain of the Indian T20I side, replacing Axar Patel
As per reports, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav is deemed fit and is about to return to lead the Indian team for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which starts on the 9th of September in the United Arab Emirates.
Likely with the return of the skipper, Gill and Pandya’s hopes for leading the T20I side are crushed; however, Gill has been considered to be the deputy of the Indian T20I captain, who recently recovered after undergoing a sports hernia surgery.
Hence, this would not only mark Gill’s return to the shortest format of the game but also witness his growing stature in Indian cricket, marking him as a leader across formats in the dressing room.
Rohit Sharma’s ODI captaincy under threat from his own deputy
The buzz has risen ever since the end of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, as Shubman Gill has been named as an option to replace the former skipper Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format as well.
Shubman Gill is currently the vice-captain of the Indian ODI side and is likely to replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI skipper for the ICC World Cup 2027. Though there has been no such confirmation of whether the transition will be taking place immediately, as Rohit Sharma’s next assignment is in the ODI series against Australia.
The batter, playing only the ODI format and the IPL mostly as an impact player, has posed several doubts on his fitness regime.
Shubman Gill’s IPL dominance set to earn him a T20I spot
Following his snub from the T20I side, Shubman Gill was not part of India’s team that won the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. While following the World Cup, he played in T20Is but was dropped from the format to focus on the Test and ODI formats.
However, the young batter was a constant part of India’s Test expeditions against Bangladesh, Australia, and now England, while he also played the ODI series against England earlier this year, followed by the Champions Trophy.
Moreover, Gill was in terrific form in the IPL after three successful seasons, where he amassed 890 runs at a strike rate of 157.80, 426 at 147.40, and 650 at 155.88, in 2023, 2024, and 2025, respectively, while he was also the captain in the past two seasons. This forced the Indian selectors to reconsider him in the shorter format.
