New Delhi: Shubman Gill is reportedly unlikely to make the cut in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 despite enjoying a stellar campaign with the bat in the recently concluded Test series against England. Mohammed Siraj, who was also a standout performer with the ball in the England Test series, is unlikely to be picked in the squad for the Asia Cup.
The Asia Cup 2025 will be held in the UAE and will be played in T20 format. The tournament is set to get underway on September 09, with India scheduled to open their campaign against UAE on September 10. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel will meet in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19, to announce India’s squad for the continental tournament.
The selectors are spoilt for choice ahead of the squad selection as a number of players are in contention to regain their spots in the T20 squad. However, the selectors’ choices might defy some popular expectations. As per a report in Cricbuzz, both Gill and Siraj are unlikely to find a place in the Asia Cup 2025 squad despite their terrific show in the England Test series.
Gill smashed a whopping 750 runs in the Test series against England, recording the second-best aggregate by an Indian batter in a series in the longest format, behind only the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. However, his batting heroics came in a Test series, and Gill has not been in India’s T20I plans for quite some time now.
Gill last played a T20I for India in the Sri Lanka series in July last year. He performed well for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 earlier this year, and there is a case for him to be selected as an opener. However, the Indian team management doesn’t want to disturb the settled pairing of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma at the top.
As per the report, Jaiswal has an edge over Gill for the third opener’s slot in the Asia Cup 2025 squad. However, Gill can be included if India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir pushes for his selection. Meanwhile, Tilak Varma, skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh are likely to comprise India’s top 5 in the tournament. Shivam Dube is also likely to retain his spot in the T20I squad.
