Shubman Gill equals Sobers, Bradman, achieves multiple feats with superb ton in 4th Test vs England

New Delhi: Continuing his purple patch in the series, Shubman Gill notched up another magnificent ton during India’s second innings of the ongoing 4th Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester. Having rescued India’s sinking ship alongside opener KL Rahul after their disastrous start on Day 4, Gill continued his fine form to notch up a superb ton on the final day of the Test match.

It was a stellar innings under pressure from the Indian captain, who braved an injury blow to his finger and displayed great composure to battle his way to a gritty 103-run knock of 238 deliveries. It was Gill’s 4th century in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, and his 9th in Test cricket for India.

Resuming India’s 2nd innings on 174/2 on Day 4, Gill and Rahul extended their solid 3rd-wicket stand to 188 runs before it was broken by Ben Stokes. Stokes trapped Rahul lbw to send him packing on 90. Gill was then hit on his fingers by a vicious delivery from the English skipper. However, he played through pain to complete a brilliant ton under pressure, keeping India on track to save the Test match ahead of Lunch on Day 5.

Shubman Gill achieves multiple feats

He became the first batter in Test history to score four centuries in his debut series as captain, surpassing the likes of Warwick Armstrong, Don Bradman, Greg Chappell, Virat Kohli and Steven Smith, who all scored three centuries in the first Test series as captain.

Gill also joined Bradman on the elite list of captains with the most hundreds in a Test series. With four centuries in the ongoing series against England, the Indian skipper holds the record for the joint most hundreds by a captain in a Test series anywhere in the world. Bradman and India legend Sunil Gavaskar too have scored 4 centuries each in a Test series as a captain.
