Shubman Gill breaks silence on rumors of rift with Rohit Sharma: “Our relationship now…”

Newly appointed Indian skipper Shubman Gill has shut down the chances for any other controversial narrative after ruling out speculations over his strained relationship with the former captain Rohit Sharma.

India are already in Australia for the long-awaited white ball series, as the series begins tomorrow on the 19th of October. The Indian team are likely to stay until 9th November and would then fly back to feature in a further long home series against WTC defending champions South Africa.

Hence, for Shubman Gill and co., the coming two months are packed with crucial international cricket action across all three formats. However, for Indian legends Rohit and Virat, the focus would only be on the limited ODI matches.

“The narrative that is going on outside is different, but there is nothing different in our relationship now,” said Shubman Gill

Just before the Australia tour, which was anticipated not only due to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s return but also due to the clash of the ICC World Cup 2023 finalists, India and Australia, another layer of anticipation was added. Shubman Gill was appointed the new captain of the ODI side, replacing Champions Trophy-winning skipper Rohit Sharma.

Ever since the announcement, the Indian fans have been split between those supporting BCCI’s move and the other group criticizing the BCCI, Indian management, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and Shubman Gill. There have also been speculations of a strained relationship between Gill and his batting partner.

“The narrative that is going on outside is different, but there is nothing different in our relationship now. We are just like how we used to be before; everything is the same,” confirmed Shubman Gill, refusing all such claims made on social media.

I like to get the thoughts of everyone, and then, based on my understanding of the game, take the final decision” – Gill

He is about to make his debut as the skipper on Australian soil and has no experience of one of the most challenging tracks in World cricket. However, unlike the England tour, where he made his debut as Test captain, here he has the guidance of the most senior Indian cricketers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

“He is very helpful. If there is any observation he makes after his years of experience, he tells me & if there is anything I want to ask him, I go and ask him and ask his opinion, and ask what he would have done in such a situation,” Gill added, reflecting on the backing from Rohit Sharma and the likely possibility of the former skippers helping the young captain.

“I like to get the thoughts of everyone, and then, based on my understanding of the game, take the final decision.” Gill’s words reflect a true sense of captaincy.

Shubman Gill finds privilege in captaining Rohit-Kohli for India

While heaping praises on the two Indian veterans from the press conference held ahead of the start of the series on Sunday, he has also brought to notice his utmost privilege to lead a team comprising the two greats.

Gill, the Kohli-Rohit fanboy, is en route to be India’s all-format skipper in the coming years. He has already taken charge of the two formats and will be named the skipper in the T20I side as well.
