Shubman Gill made a return to the Asia Cup squad and was even named the vice captain ahead of Axar Patel for the gala event. His return stirred a controversy as many felt that players like Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal deserved a place in the squad before . The 25-year-old will have a point to prove when he takes the field during India’s opening game against the UAE today, September 10, at the Dubai International Stadium.
According to a report in PTI, Gill looked in great touch at the ICC academy during the optional training session before the match. However, in one slightly embarrassing instance, he was shocked by a local net bowler who breached his defences and rattled his stumps with a thunderbolt.
Meanwhile, the report also revealed that Abhishek Sharma left everyone stunned as he rained sixes for fun in his hour-long training session, sending a huge warning to teams in the Asia Cup. It revealed that Sharma hit no less than 25-30 sixes during his stay at the crease.
Sanju Samson To Miss Out?
With Gill back, was speculated to lose his opening slot, where he had scored three hundreds in the last 10 innings. Unfortunately for Samson, he faces a serious threat of missing out on a place in the XI despite a brilliant run in the Kerala Cricket League as Jitesh Sharma is better suited to batting down the order.
Samson did not get to bat in the main training session on Monday and skipped the practice on Wednesday, hinting that he may not be part of the playing XI against the UAE. Jitesh Sharma, on the other hand, sharpened his wicketkeeping skills with a no-look catching drill under the watchful eyes of fielding coach T Dilip.
