Shubman Gill achieves multiple feats, joins Kohli, Gavaskar in elite lists with century after double ton vs England

New Delhi: Team India skipper Shubman Gill continued his impressive run with the willow during the visitors’ second innings on Day 4 of the 2nd Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday. After his stunning 269-run knock in the first innings, Gill slammed a brilliant century in the second to join the legendary Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list.

Gill, who notched up his maiden Test double ton in India’s first innings at Edgbaston, slammed his eighth ton in the longest format and fifth against England. Gill completed his century 128 deliveries with a single off spinner Shoaib Bashir in the 67th over of India’s second innings on Day 4 of the Test match. The Indian skipper once again looked in spectacular touch as he cruised his way to a memorable ton.

2nd Indian to score a ton and a double ton in the same Test

Gill achieved an astounding feat with his impressive ton during India’s second innings of the Edgbaston Test as he became only the second Indian batter after Gavaskar to score a century and a double century in the same Test. Gavaskar achieved the feat in a Test match against West Indies at the Port of Spain in 1971.

Gill also became only the second batter after Graham Gooch to score a ton and a double ton in the same Test in England. Gooch achieved the feat during the Lord’s Test against India in 1990.

Shubman Gill matches Virat Kohli’s remarkable feat

Gill also became only the second player in history to smash three centuries in his first two Test matches as captain after India great Virat Kohli. Gill, who slammed a sublime 147-run knock in the first Test against England at Headingley in Leeds, now has three tons in two Test matches against the hosts. He is also only the third Indian to score a century in both innings of a Test match as captain.

Only Kohli and Gavaskar have slammed tons in both innings of a Test match as captain. Gavaskar achieved the feat in the Kolkata Test against West Indies in 1978, while Kohli slammed a ton apiece as captain in both innings of the Aideliade Test against Australia in 2014.

India captains with centuries in both innings of a Test:

Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, Kolkata, 1978
Virat Kohli vs AUS, Adelaide, 2014
Shubman Gill vs ENG, Edgbaston, 2025
