India are all set to return to T20 action in the Asia Cup 2025, which begins from September 9. This will be a major tournament for India as it will act as perfect preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026, which is just six months away.
Fans are eagerly waiting to see what the squad might be. There are reports that Shubman Gill might make it into the side as the vice-captain. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were also in the reckoning to get selected. However, now the situation looks different.
According to a report by The Times of India, the squad for the Asia Cup 2025 will likely be announced on August 19 (Tuesday). The selection committee meeting will be followed by a press conference by chief selector Ajit Agarkar on this date.
India are not expected to tinker with the T20I opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Hence, Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to be ignored, as selectors have asked him to focus on Test cricket. Shubman Gill is also struggling to find his place in the side. Despite a superb IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer, too, is likely to be ignored in the Asia Cup 2025 squad.
“In fact, with India looking to persist with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Gill is currently struggling to even make it to the side. Even Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a great series in England, and middle-order bat Shreyas Iyer are likely not to be picked for the T20 side. Jaiswal has been told by the selectors to focus on red-ball cricket,” a source close to the proceedings told the publication.
Suryakumar Yadav To Remain Captain
There were rumours circulating that Shubman Gill could be made T20I captain after his superb show vs England in his debut Test captaincy assignment. Suryakumar Yadav is expected to remain the captain in the Asia Cup, and will also likely attend the selection meeting and press conference on August 19 alongside Ajit Agarkar.
India begin their Asia Cup campaign on September 10 with a clash against UAE. The blockbuster India vs Pakistan clash will take place on September 14 at the Dubai International Stadium.
