New Delhi: In a huge relief for his family members, fans and the Indian team management, Shreyas Iyer is reportedly on his way to full recovery after undergoing surgery for a spleen injury in Sydney, Australia. The Team India batter suffered a spleen laceration while taking an acrobatic catch during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney last week.
He hurt his lower rib cage after an awkward fall while completing the catch and immediately limped off the ground in immense pain. Iyer was admitted to a hospital in Sydney, where scans revealed he had ruptured his spleen, which required immediate surgical intervention. He also had to be admitted to the ICU due to internal bleeding caused by the injury.
As per Cricbuzz, the Indian cricketer underwent surgery at the hospital and has totally recovered since. He is already out of the ICU, and his condition remains stable. However, Iyer has been advised to rest for another five days or a week, depending on his recovery. BCCI has assigned Indian team physician Dr Rizwan Khan to monitor the batter’s condition at the Sydney hospital as he continues his recovery process.
While completing Alex Carey’s catch during the 3rd ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Iyer fell awkwardly and injured himself badly. Not many would have thought, but a spleen injury meant his condition deteriorated quickly. He was admitted to the ICU following internal bleeding and underwent minor surgery during the treatment.
As per the report, Iyer has been doing his routine chores on his own and has been taking phone calls from friends and family. He is also eating home-cooked meals, provided by friends in Sydney. Earlier, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav also confirmed on Tuesday that Iyer is responding to messages and is doing well.
Will Shreyas Iyer return in South Africa series?
India’s ODI vice-captain Iyer is expected to return to action next when the hosts take on South Africa in a three-match ODI series at home next year. However, his participation remains in doubt due to his spleen injury. Iyer is likely to continue his rehab and recovery at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru after returning from Australia, and it remains to be seen if he will recover fully in time for the South Africa series.
Iyer is a vital cog in India’s batting line-up in ODIs and has been a consistent performer at the crucial no.4 spot. He played a brilliant knock of 61 runs in the 2nd ODI in Adelaide against Australia, before getting injured in the third and final game in Sydney. The Indian batter will be hoping to recover fully as he aims to return to action for the Men in Blue.
Shreyas Iyer’s recovery has been faster than expected: BCCI secretary
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also provided an update on Iyer’s health and said the Indian batter’s recovery has been much faster than expected and that he could return in a much lesser time than expected. Saikia said it would normally take someone 6-8 weeks to recover, but Iyer might make a comeback earlier than expected.
“Shreyas is much, much, much better. His recovery has been much faster than what the doctor expected. I’m in regular touch with Dr Rizwan (Khan, Indian team doctor who stayed back with Iyer to assist with his treatment at the Sydney hospital). Normally, he should take six to eight weeks (to recover completely), but you can expect a surprise from him because he may recover much earlier,” Saikia told the Times of India.
