Dr. Gulati explains that injuries to the spleen occur due to road accidents, serious injury to the stomach or during sports. Some of its symptoms are also visible. In this, severe pain or pressure is immediately felt in the left upper part of the stomach. This pain can reach the shoulder. If these symptoms appear after an accident or fall, then it is a medical emergency. In case of spleen injury, immediate hospitalization is necessary.
How is spleen injury diagnosed?
Dr. Yash explains that the first ultrasound is done for a patient admitted to a trauma center or other department with such symptoms. So that it can be known whether there is bleeding inside or not. After this CT scan can also be done. It shows which part of the spleen has ruptured and how deep the injury is. Along with this, it is seen whether any internal bleeding is taking place. If so, then by looking at hemoglobin and hematocrit we can know how much blood has been shed. After all these tests the treatment is started. It depends on whether the injury is light or deep.
If the injury is mild then there is not much danger and if it is deep then blood transfusion may be required. In some cases surgery has to be done. In this the spleen may have to be removed.
Dr. Dinesh says that if timely treatment is not received, spleen injury can be fatal. Therefore, do not ignore bleeding or left side pain after any abdominal injury.
How long does recovery take?

If there is a mild injury, it heals completely in 2 to 3 weeks. If it is serious then it is advised to take rest for 46 weeks.
