New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer is set to make a comeback in India’s T20I and Test squads for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 and the two-match Test series against the West Indies. According to a Times of India report, the selectors will meet in August to pick the teams for the Asia Cup and West Indies series.
The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 9 and will be played in the T20I format as teams will look to prepare for the T20 World Cup in 2026. The two-match series against the West Indies will start from October 2 in Ahmedabad. Iyer is in contention for a place in the Indian team for all formats of the game.
“We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy,” sources told TOI.
The source further added that the selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin and will be crucial in a home season that involves four Test matches – two each against West Indies and South Africa.
Iyer was dropped from the team after a back issue and lost his place during the home series against England last year. But now the decision makers feel that the batter has done the right things after losing his contract. He has scored 480 runs at an average of 68.57, including two centuries for Mumbai in five Ranji matches last season.
The middle-order batter has scored 811 runs in the 14 Test matches at an average of 36.86, including one century. He last played a Test match for India in Vizag during the England tour in February 2024.
Iyer was India’s highest run-getter in their title-winning campaign in the Champions Trophy, scoring 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60, including two half-centuries.
Karun Nair to miss Duleep Trophy
According to a report from the same website, Karun Nair is all set to miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025 due to a fracture in his finger. He got hit on the hand by a rising delivery during the second innings of the fifth Test against England at the Oval and will not play for Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy.
