In the last ODI match played in Sydney, the Indian team won by 9 wickets. The series was already in Australia’s control but Team India saved itself from the embarrassment of a clean sweep. While this victory made the Indian fans happy with the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to form, the team’s star batsman Shreyas Iyer got a big shock. Iyer, who got badly injured while trying to take a catch while fielding in this match, is now away from cricket for the next few weeks.

Ribs hurt while taking a catch

In the third and last match of the ODI series, the Australian team was batting first. Then in the 34th over, Alex Carey’s catch bounced off Harshit Rana’s ball. Iyer, who was present at the backward point, ran backwards and then took an excellent catch while diving. But as soon as he fell on the field after catching the ball, he appeared to be in pain. Iyer was seen screaming in pain by pressing his stomach and chest area, after which the medical team took him off the field.

BCCI had said in one of its social media posts during the match that Iyer was taken to the hospital to check the injury. The board has not yet given information about what came out in his report, but a report by news agency PTI has revealed that Iyer has suffered an injury to his left rib cage, due to which he will remain out of the field for the next few days. In the report, quoting sources associated with BCCI, it has been said that in the initial investigation it seems that Iyer has suffered a blow to his ribs.

How long will Iyer remain out?

According to the information, after returning to India, Iyer will go to BCCI’s Center of Excellence in Bengaluru for further investigation. It has been told in the report that at present it seems that Iyer will remain completely away from cricket action for at least 3 weeks. Due to this, there is doubt about his playing in the ODI series against South Africa. This series will start from November 30 in Ranchi. BCCI source has said that if ‘hairline fracture’ is found in Iyer’s ribs then his return may take even longer. As of now, it is not certain to play in the South Africa series.
