Shreyas Iyer discharged from Sydney hospital, recovering well after spleen injury

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday confirmed that Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from the hospital in Sydney and is recovering well after undergoing a minor procedure for a spleen injury. Iyer injured his lower rib cage during the 3rd ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) last month.

Iyer fell on the ground awkwardly, trying to complete an acrobatic catch to dismiss Australia wicket-keeper batter Alex Carey during the game. He suffered a blunt injury to his abdomen and ended up rupturing his spleen, a vital organ which is protected by the rib cage.

The Indian batter was admitted to a hospital in Sydney, where he underwent treatment for a laceration on his spleen. He also had to be admitted to the ICU following internal bleeding. Iyer is completely stable now, but will remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations before he can return home.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same,” the BCCI said in an official statement.

“He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his progress, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the statement added.
