An 82-year-old woman in Colombia had a ‘stone baby’ in her stomach for 40 years. This was discovered during investigation on complaint of stomach ache. It forms when a pregnancy in the abdomen fails and the body turns the fetus into stone to avoid infection.

One such case has come to light, where an 82-year-old woman, who went to the hospital complaining of severe pain in the lower abdomen, got a big shock.
When the doctors scanned him, they were also surprised. The reason was the finding of a ‘stone baby’ in the pelvic area of the woman. This child was not in the uterus, but between the joints of the pelvic bones and the lower part of the spine. Doctors told that this did not happen suddenly, the woman had been carrying this ‘stone baby’ inside her body for about 40 years.
According to a Telegraph report, this 82-year-old woman from Colombia was carrying a four-pound calcified fetus named ‘Lithopedion’ in her body for decades, and she was not even aware of it. Doctors came to know about this ‘stone baby’ when the woman was X-rayed. Later it was taken out through surgery. Talking about this, Dr. Garci said that ‘Stone Baby’ or Lithopedion is formed when pregnancy occurs in the stomach instead of the uterus. He said the condition occurs when a pregnancy ultimately fails, usually because the fetus does not receive adequate blood supply, and the body has no way to expel the fetus.
As a result, the body turns this fetus into stone. The body uses the same immune process to create this ‘stone baby’, which protects the body from any foreign object found inside the body. Doctor Garci said that it may seem strange, but this process keeps the body healthy. Just as old cartilage in the knee becomes calcified when it gets stuck, similarly calcification of the tissue protects the mother from infection. This is the reason why this ‘stone baby’ can remain in the stomach undetected for decades.
In many cases, there are no symptoms even after it is detected. Doctor Garci said that this type of abdominal pregnancy occurs in one in 10,000 pregnancies.
