According to the Vedas, Saffron Shiva is the only god in the entire universe who is worshiped in the form of a linga. Lord Shiva is worshiped in the Linga form because he is the root cause of the entire universe. Lord Shiva is considered the god of beginning and end. It is believed that Lord Shiva has neither any form nor any size. Mahadev is considered formless.
Since Lord Shiva has no beginning and no end, Linga is considered to be the formless form of Lord Shiva. Shankar ji is the corporeal form of God and Shivalinga is the formless form. Shivalinga is a symbol of formless Brahma. According to Vayu Purana, after the destruction in every era, the world merges into this Shivalinga. Then this creates the world. In the Vedas the word linga has been used for the subtle body. It is made up of 17 elements.
How did Shivalinga originate?
According to the story described in the Puranas, once there was a dispute between Brahma ji and Shri Hari Vishnu regarding who was the best among the two? Both were calling themselves superior. Then a linga appeared. After this, both the gods tried to find its source, but even after thousands of years the source of that Shivalinga could not be found. Then when Lord Brahma asked the light pillar, the answer came that it was Shiva.
All sources have originated from Him only. Even Brahma and Vishnu were born from this. It is said that only after this Lord Shiva was established in formless form in the form of Shivalinga. First of all Lord Brahma and Vishnu worshiped that Linga of Shiva. Since then the tradition of worshiping Shivalinga started.
