Story of Shiv Ji and Yamraj: Death is the final and unchangeable truth of this world. No one can avoid death. Any creature that is born on this earth will definitely die. Even the gods did not escape death. He too had to leave this earth through death, but Lord Shiva has defeated death many times. For this reason, he is called ‘Mrityunjay and Kaal of Kaal is also called Mahakaal.

God himself is considered to be the master of the beloved devotee of God. Even death cannot have power over him. Even Yamraj, the god of death, cannot take away a devotee of God. According to the story, there was a sage Mrinkad. He did not have any children. He prayed to Lord Shiva for years for a child. Lord Shiva was pleased with his penance. He asked sage Mrinkad to ask for a boon. On this he asked for the boon of having a son from Lord Shiva. Mahadev blessed him to have a son, but said that his son would live only 12 years.

After this, a son was born in the sage’s house, whom the sage named Markandeya. As time passed, the sage started worrying about his child. Because he knew that the son would live only for 12 years. Seeing his father’s sadness, Markandeya tried to find out the reason. Then sage Mrikand told everything. Markandeya understood that only Lord Shiva could solve this problem.

Balrishi got scared after seeing Yamraj

After this he started worshiping Lord Shiva and chanting Mahamrityunjaya Mantra at the confluence of Ganga and Gomti. When Markandeya completed 12 years of age, Yamraj came to take him and started taking him with himself forcefully. Seeing Yamraj, Balrishi got scared and invoking Lord Shiva, caught hold of Shivalinga.

After this, as soon as Yamraj attacked Shivalinga to break the meditation of Markandeya sage, Mahadev himself appeared to protect the devotee. Not only this, Lord Shiva killed Yamraj with his trident and sacrificed his life to Markandeya. On the other hand, to maintain balance in the universe, he showed mercy on Yamraj and brought him back to life.
