Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her businessman husband Raj Kundra are once again in trouble. The Economic Offex Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has registered a case on both husband and wife in the fraud case of Rs 60 crore. This is not the first fraud case against Raj Kundra. In December 2024, he was summoned by ED in a money laundering case related to alleged illegal distribution of pornographic films.
Deepak Kothari, director and businessman of Mumbai’s Lotus Capital Financial Services Limited, has filed a case of financial fraud against celebrity couple. Kothari alleged that Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty had borrowed these rupees to increase their business, but they used that money for personal expenses.
After all, what is the whole matter?
In the FIR, the complainant claimed that Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra had contacted him in 2015 to take a loan of ₹ 75 crore for his now closed company, Best Deal TV Private Limited. At that time, Shetty and Kundra were the directors of the company who specialized in the promotion of lifestyle products and an online shopping platform used to run. Promised to pay interest interest at 12 per cent annually on this amount.
Did not return money by promising
Kothari alleged that the couple later requested to convert this amount into investment instead of loan. In return, he promised to return some amount as principal every month. After this, in 2015, he transferred about 60 crore rupees through a share subscription agreement in two parts. This amount was deposited in the bank accounts of Best Deal TV. So far this amount has not been returned. He claimed that many attempts to recover money were unsuccessful and accused the couple of “using” money for their benefit.
Celebrity couple’s lawyer’s statement
Here, Shilpa and Raj’s lawyer Prashant Patil says that efforts are being made to spoil the image by making wrong allegations on their client. He said, “An alleged case has been registered against my clients in the Economic Offenses Branch, Mumbai. Initially, my clients deny all the allegations against him, which are completely of civil nature and on which NCLT Mumbai has ruled 04/10/2024.
