In Hinduism, serpents are considered as deity form and they are also worshiped. Many mythological stories related to serpents are also described in religious texts. There is mention of 8 serpents in the scriptures, which are called Ashtnag.
However, out of these 8 serpents, there are 3 snakes which are considered to be the most powerful. These are the three snakes- Sheshnag, Vasuki and Takshak. There are different beliefs and stories about these three serpents.
Who was Sheshnag?
Sheshnag is also called “Anant”, it means “no end”. In Hinduism, he has been considered as the posture of Lord Vishnu. Sheshnag has a thousand fun and they are carrying the weight of the earth on their head.
Who was Vasuki Nag?
Vasuki is considered the king of all the serpents, who sits around the neck of Lord Shiva. Vasuki has a hundred fun. After Sheshnag, he was made Nagraj and ruled the serpents for ages.
Who was Takshak Nag?
Takshak is considered to be the most dangerous of all serpents, which is mentioned in Mahabharata. It is believed that Takshak Nag bitten King Parikshit, due to which he died.
Sheshnag
Servant of Lord Vishnu:- Sheshnag is also called the servant of Lord Vishnu and “infinite”, which means “infinite” or “which has no end”.
Vishnu’s bed:- Sheshnag is known as the infinite (last) bed of Lord Vishnu, on which Srihari Yoga rests in sleep.
Balance of universe:- Sheshnag is also considered a symbol of the balance of the universe.
Earth load:- In the Puranas, Sheshnag is shown raising the earth on its fun.
Avatar:- Sheshnag has been added to the incarnations of Lord Rama and Krishna in the form of Laxman ji and Balarama.
Vasuki Nag
Servant of Lord Shiva:- Vasuki is considered a favorite servant and supreme devotee of Lord Shiva. He is shown wrapped around Lord Shiva’s neck.
Samudra Manthan:- Religious belief is that Vasuki Nag did a rope during the sea churning to wrap the Mandarachal mountain.
Renunciation and service:- Vasuki is considered a symbol of renunciation and service, as he dedicated himself during the churning of the ocean.
King of Nagas:- Vasuki is also known as the king of serpents and is considered the lord of Nagaloka.
Takshak Nag
Most deadly:- Takshak Nag is known for his power and poison. It is said that their poison is the deadliest in the whole world.
Produce:- Takshak Nag originated from the womb of Kashyapa Rishi and Kadru.
Residence:- Takshak Nag used to live in Patal folk and was considered the most poisonous among the serpents.
The most cruel:- Takshak Nag has also been described as the most fierce, cruel and flying snake among the serpents.
According to Hindu mythology, Sheshnag is considered the most powerful, as he is associated with Lord Vishnu and lifted the universe. Vasuki Nag is also powerful, but his mention is mainly associated with Lord Shiva. Takshak Nag is also very toxic and powerful, but they are not associated with the gods like Sheshnag and Vasuki Nag. In such a situation, Sheshnag, Takshak and Vasuki Nag, Sheshnag is said to be the most powerful.
