New Delhi: Third-seed Alexander Zverev was ousted from the Shanghai Masters on Monday after a shock defeat against 54th-ranked Arthur Rinderknech in the third round of the tournament. Zverev’s disappointing run in the season continued as he lost the third-round clash 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Rinderknech. Zverev was the highest-ranked player in the tournament.
He got off to a strong start in the game against Rinderknech, winning the first set 6-4. However, he failed to break the serve again and lacked control in the next two sets as he was beaten comfortably in the match that lasted over two hours. This was Zverev’s 2nd loss against Rinderknech, having lost against him in the Wimbledon first round earlier this year.
Rinderknech will now take on Jiri Lehecka in his next game. Lehecka defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets in his third-round clash at the Shanghai Masters. Seventh-seed Alex De Minaur earlier beat Kamil Majchrzak 6-1, 7-5 in his third-round match to bag his 36th win on hard courts this year.
