Shanghai Masters 2025: Daniil Medvedev beats Learner Tien to set up quarterfinal clash with Alex De Minaur

New Delhi: Daniil Medvedev continued his winning run at the Shanghai Masters 2025 on Wednesday with a nail-biting victory against US teenager Learner Tien in the Round of 16. The Russian world no.18 defeated Tien 7-6 (8/6), 6-7 (1/7), 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals, where he will be up against world no.7 Alex Di Minaur.

The two players gave their all in what turned out to be a thrilling first set. Medvedev broke Tien in the ninth game in the first set, but the American bounced back immediately. However, the Russian utilised his experience to win the tiebreak and take the first set 7-6 (8/6) after a gripping display of quality tennis.

In the second set, Tien fought harder and made the Russian toil for each point. Medvedev seemed to have picked up a knock and was limping before the tie-breaker in the second set. He eventually lost the tie-breaker as Tien claimed the set 6-7 (1/7) comfortably in the end to force the match into a decisive third set.

In the third set, Medvedev held his nerves despite being frustrated and managed to eke out a 6-4 win to clinch the match. Medvedev will look to continue his winning run in the tournament when he takes on Di Minaur, who beat Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-2 in straight sets in his Round of 16 clash on Wednesday.
