The video of the shameful action of the police in Meerut went viral, in which the constable and the home guard removed the body from the e-rickshaw and threw it in another police station area. When the incident came to light, the SSP suspended the inspector and the constable and started a departmental inquiry.
The night of Meerut unfolded like a dark story, where the guardians of law and order were seen putting humanity to shame. An incident came to light late on Thursday night in the seemingly peaceful Lohiyanagar area of the city which raised questions on the entire police system. The police, which usually ensure the dignified last rights of the dead, themselves loaded a dead body in an e-rickshaw, dumped it in another police station area and fled from there. The entire matter has come into limelight after the CCTV footage of the incident went viral.
How did the truth come out?
In the viral video, it is clearly visible that two uniformed constables and a home guard remove the body from the e-rickshaw, throw it on the roadside and then quickly run away from there. The footage spread on social media within minutes and people were outraged.
SSP Meerut immediately took cognizance and handed over the investigation to SP City. Investigation revealed that those who threw the dead body were constable Rajesh and home guard Rohtash posted in Nauchandi police station area. This was done both to hide the incident and to avoid responsibility.

Why was the body thrown?
Investigation revealed that the body was found in Nauchandi police station area. According to the rules, the concerned post in-charge had to take the responsibility of post-mortem, case registration and investigation. But to avoid increasing his crime record and to get rid of additional responsibility, the Inspector himself got the body thrown by his subordinate constable and home guard in another police station area.
This despicable move might have been suppressed had the CCTV cameras installed on the road not recorded the entire incident.
Strict action: Inspector and constable suspended
As soon as the video went viral, SSP Meerut Vipin Tada took action and suspended the post in-charge and the constable with immediate effect. A letter has been sent to the Commandant Home Guard for action against the Home Guard.
The SSP also said that the departmental investigation is ongoing and if the allegations are proved, the concerned inspector may lose his job.
Police of other police station area saved dignity
The police of the area where the body was thrown, showing humanity, took possession of the body and initiated legal proceedings. Had they also been careless, the body might have remained lying on the road for hours.
Questions on humanity, also on police system
This incident that came to light in Meerut is not only a departmental mistake, but is also a serious injury to humanity. The job of the police is to enforce the law and protect the citizens, not to play with the dignity of the dead to shirk their responsibility.
This case highlights the need to improve police accountability and behavior across the state. Now all eyes are on the departmental inquiry, which will decide what strict action will be taken against the culprits.
