Shah Rukh Khan’s co-star Susmita Mukherjee confesses she ‘sold’ her soul to work in C-grade films; What exactly happened?

Actor Sushmita Mukherjee, known for her roles in Golmaal and Aaja Nachle, says she worked in C-grade films during a difficult phase in her life to pay a loan of Rs 1 crore. The actor said she and her husband Raja Bundela had a production company, but that went under in 2002, and they both had to struggle to pay the money they owed.

Why did Golmaal actress Sushmita Mukherjee work in C-grade films?

Someone asked me, ‘Ma’am, why did you act in bad films?’ I felt very bad because it is a fact. And it is a very disturbing thing to go back to my life and say why I did those sexist, C-grade films that were derogatory to women. They were not pornography, god no, but they were not great films, just bad choices,” Mukherjee shared in an Instagram Live.

What is Sushmita Mukherjee known for?

Mukherjee, 61, has been working in the industry since the late 80s and has multiple films to her credit, including Khalnayak, Rudaali, King Uncle and Khoya Khoya Chaand besides her extensive work on television.

Looking back, the actor said she has no regrets, though she feels bad about the choices that she was forced to make.

“Did I sell my soul? Of course, I sold my soul. Did I feel good about it? I didn’t feel good then, and now not at all. But I was helpless. In 2002, my husband’s and my production company went under, and we had a loan of Rs 1 crore… We had recovery agents at the door who would abuse us.”

She added, “It was a difficult phase, and my children were young, and then I was forced to work to pay my loan. We both worked hard and paid the loan in 3-4 years. So I had to make those choices,” she said.

Mukherjee also wanted to provide for the higher education of her two sons by sending them outside India for further studies, and she is happy that she could do that by working hard.
