Senegal Celebrates Africa Cup Trophy Amid Controversial Title Stripping by CAF

PARIS (AP) – Senegal’s national soccer team showcased the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in front of a large crowd on Saturday, despite the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) controversial decision to revoke the title and award it to Morocco.

Prior to a friendly match against Peru at the Stade de France, Senegal’s players, led by captain Kalidou Koulibaly, paraded the trophy during the pre-game festivities, highlighting the country’s strong Senegalese community in Paris.

Senegal’s Response to CAF Decision

The Senegalese Football Association announced its intention to present the Africa Cup trophy to fans before the match. Following the CAF’s ruling, Senegalese FA president Abdoulaye Fall described the decision as ‘the most grossly unfair administrative robbery’ in soccer history and vowed to defend the players’ honor at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Legal Challenge Against Title Stripping

Senegal is contesting CAF’s unexpected ruling from last week, which stripped the team of its title won in a chaotic final in January, awarding it to Morocco. The CAF appeals board determined that Senegal had ‘forfeited the final,’ converting its 1-0 victory in extra time into a 3-0 default win for Morocco due to player protests over a penalty decision.

CAS Appeal Process

Senegal’s appeal to regain its champion status was submitted to CAS this week, although no specific timeline has been established for the proceedings, which are expected to be lengthy. The Senegalese government has also called for an international investigation into potential corruption within CAF.

Typically, CAS appeals can take months to schedule hearings and additional time to deliver verdicts. However, Senegal’s legal representatives will request an expedited process, hoping that both the Moroccan federation and CAF will agree to resolve the matter within two months.
