Seiya Suzuki to Miss Cubs’ Season Opener Due to Knee Injury Sustained in World Baseball Classic

MESA, Ariz. (AP) – Seiya Suzuki will not participate in the Chicago Cubs’ season opener following a minor ligament strain in his right knee incurred during the World Baseball Classic, according to manager Craig Counsell on Saturday.

The team is considering the possibility of placing Suzuki on the injured list as they prepare for their first game against Washington at Wrigley Field on Thursday.

Injury Details

Suzuki sustained the injury during Japan’s 8-5 defeat to Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinal on March 14 in Miami. He exited the game after a headfirst slide into second base while attempting to steal, limping back to the dugout.

Return to Spring Training

On Monday, Suzuki returned to the Cubs’ spring training facility, observed walking slowly with a soft brace on his injured knee. Imaging tests were conducted to evaluate the severity of his injury.

Contract and Performance

At 31 years old, Suzuki is entering the final year of an $85 million, five-year contract with the Cubs. Over 532 games, he has achieved a batting average of .269, hitting 87 home runs and recording 296 RBIs, including a team-high 103 RBIs and 32 homers in 2025.
