AUGUSTA, Ga. – Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, prepares for this year’s tournament while navigating significant changes in his personal life.
With his son Bennett approaching his second birthday and the recent birth of his second child, Remy, Scheffler’s focus has shifted from golf to family.
Despite being the favorite to win at Augusta National, Scheffler admits that family obligations have taken precedence over his recent golf performance. He has not competed since the Players Championship in March, having withdrawn from the Houston Open to support his wife during childbirth.
Recent Performance and Challenges
Scheffler’s recent form has not matched his previous season’s success, where he secured six victories in a short span. This year, he won his first tournament at The American Express in January but has struggled since, finishing outside the top ten in his last three events.
He acknowledges that his time away from the course could have a positive impact. ‘I’m getting plenty of sleep. My wife’s a trouper,’ Scheffler remarked, noting that having a newborn allows for some rest amidst the demands of parenthood.
Family Moments at the Masters
During the Masters’ family-friendly Par 3 Contest, Scheffler’s children drew attention, with Bennett playfully swinging a toy club and Remy being carried by their mother. These moments highlight the joy Scheffler finds in his family, even as he prepares for a high-stakes competition.
Scheffler’s previous experience as a father during major tournaments has been eventful. In 2024, Bennett was born just before the PGA Championship, where Scheffler faced unexpected challenges, including a police incident that overshadowed his performance.
Preparing for the Masters
As Scheffler gears up for the Masters, he aims to overcome the obstacles that come with a three-week hiatus from competitive play. Historically, players returning after a break have struggled, but Scheffler remains optimistic about his chances. ‘Game feels like it’s in a good spot,’ he stated, expressing confidence in his readiness for the tournament.
Scheffler will compete alongside Robert MacIntyre and Gary Woodland in the opening rounds, with odds reflecting his status as a leading contender. He looks forward to the serene environment of Augusta National, which he described as ‘very calm’ and conducive to focus.
